Georgia Historical Marker Program
The Georgia Historical Marker Program is an outstanding tool for preserving the history of the State of Georgia. Historical markers serve to educate citizens and visitors alike about the people and events that have shaped our past and present. The program is an important way by which the Georgia Historical Society ensures a future for the past.
To qualify for a marker, buildings, structures, and sites of special events typically must be at least 50 years old. Nominations devoted to people generally require the subject to have been deceased 25 years or more. Nominations must be sponsored by at least one entity such as a historical organization, church, school, government or corporation.
The markers are black with silver lettering and display the Georgia Historical Society's seal. Sponsor names accompany the Society's at the bottom of each marker, and all markers are two-sided and free standing.
The marker program is set up on a matching basis. The current cost share for Sponsors is $1,500. The Georgia Historical Society contributes the remaining funds toward the overall cost of casting and delivering the historical marker. In addition, the sponsor accepts responsibility for the maintenance of the marker.

Prior to 1998, the Georgia Historical Marker Program was administered by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and markers erected under that program remain the property of GA DNR. The Georgia Historical Society does not maintain records of these older markers or maintain or repair pre-1998 markers themselves. For information about historical markers erected prior to 1998, please contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources at 770.389.7265.
The most comprehensive online listing of all historical markers in Georgia, including private and local markers, is maintained by the Carl Vinson Institute of Goverment. You can search that list by visiting http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/gahistmarkers/.
