    The mission of the Funk Heritage Center of Reinhardt University is to tell the story of the early Appalachian settlers and Southeastern Indians through educational programming and the collection, care and exhibition of art and artifacts. It opened in 1999 in Waleska, located in Cherokee County, 40 miles north of Atlanta. This Center was designated as Georgia’s Official Frontier and Southeastern Interpretive Center by the Georgia Legislature in 2004. In 2013 it was certified as an interpretive site on the National Park Service Trail of Tears. The Funk Heritage Center received the Georgia Humanities Council Governor’s Award for its’ programming in 2010.Visitors see an award winning 15 minute film about the Southeastern Indians before going into the Hall of the Ancients where they observe 12,000 years of Native American history through dioramas and interactive computer programs. The Sellars Gallery of Historic Hand Tools features a one-of-a-kind collection of tools from over 100 crafts and the Rogers Contemporary Native American Art Gallery has an extensive collection of paintings, baskets, sculpture and pottery by American Indians. An Appalachian Settlement is located behind the facility. It includes two 1840’s log cabins, a syrup mill and a blacksmith shop. Living history volunteers dressed in period clothing introduce children to life in the 1840’s when students visit on school field trips.     Midway Museum is a history museum documenting the History of the District of Midway, Sunbury and Riceboro, Ga. Midway Museum houses the artifacts of Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War History. Visit the 2nd oldest Church building in Georgia as well as the Midway Cemetery dating from the 1750’s. Hear the stories of our two signers of the Declaration of Independence, the British invasion and our port city, Sunbury”s time as a prisoner of war camp as well as the Civil War occupation by the Union army of Midway Church. See J. I. Daniels civil war jacket as well as Daniel Stewart’s (Teddy Roosevelt’s great grandfather) prenuptial agreement with his 3rd wife.
