Georgia Historical Society Board of Curators Announces Redesignation of
the Georgia Historical Society Research Center
Savannah, Ga., November 12, 2013 – The Board of Curators of the Georgia Historical Society voted unanimously to redesignate the Georgia Historical Society Library and Archives as the Georgia Historical Society Research Center. The vote was taken at the Fall meeting of the Board of Curators held recently in Atlanta.
“The redesignation more accurately reflects the world class research center that GHS has become,” said Robert L. Brown, Chairman of the Board of Curators at GHS. “It demonstrates to the public and the academy the depth of work being done by and at the Society and that the materials in the collection will be used to increase our knowledge about both the past and the present to create a better future.”
The Research Center will include Hodgson Hall, the current home of the Georgia Historical Society which also houses the GHS Library and Reading Room, and the Abrahams Archives Annex, located at 501 Whitaker Street in Savannah. In 2014 the Research Center will be joined by the Jepson House Education Center to complete the Georgia Historical Society Research and Education Center in Savannah.
“We are pleased that our Board has chosen to honor the Georgia Historical Society with this designation,” said Dr. W. Todd Groce, GHS President and C.E.O. “Last year alone nearly 50,000 people from every county in GA, 43 states plus the District of Columbia, and 11 foreign countries utilized the resources of the Georgia Historical Society either in person or online for personal and scholarly purposes. Our mission to collect, examine, and teach Georgia history is at the heart of everything we do and this name change clarifies and demonstrates that in a very meaningful and positive way."
Both Hodgson Hall and the Abrahams Archives Annex will retain their current names but will be under the auspices of the Georgia Historical Society Research Center. For additional information please contact Patricia Meagher, Director of Communications.
