McPherson’s Army at Snake Creek Gap

Year Erected: 1953

Marker Text: A narrow 3 mi passage between 2 ridges beginning 1 mi s of this marker & ending at the fork of Sugar Valley & Resaca roads.

May 8th 1864. While Geary's Div. (20th A.C. [US]) stormed Rocky Face Ridge at Dug Gap. 5 mi N.E., McPherson's Army of the Tenn. (15th and 16th A.C. [US]) gained a lodgment in Snake Creek Gap & held it while the 14th, 20th, & 23d Corps [US] left the Dalton front & marched through the gap.

Outflanked in his position at Dalton, Johnston [CSA] evacuated it May 12, & withdrew to Resaca, which he defended against Sherman's forces in 2 days of battle May 14th & 15th.
