SAVANNAH, Ga., October 23, 2012 - The Georgia Historical Society is pleased to announce that it has won an award for Excellence in the Educational use of Historical Records from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board (GHRAB).

The award recognizes GHS' creation of the online educator resources for Today in Georgia History - a collaborative, daily history initiative created in partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting (available at www.todayingeorgiahistory.org). The digital resources include vocabulary lists, writing prompts, daily activities, and "Learn More" resource lists comprised of suggested readings and additional resources related to each daily segment. All educator resources for the series are correlated to current Georgia Performance Standards as well as the National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies to ensure relevancy and to promote wide use in the classroom.

"GHS is engaged in outreach to educators across Georgia to promote the use of the Today in Georgia History series in the classroom and educators have been embracing the series, deeming it relevant and timely," said Christy Crisp, Director of Programs at GHS. "As Georgia teachers integrate new national Common Core Standards in Social Studies and English Language Arts into classroom instruction, they are actively seeking relevant resources, tips, and tools to help engage their students in the use of primary source materials and informational texts."

Seed funding for the production of Today in Georgia History was provided by the Woodruff Foundation through a grant of $900,000. The program introduced audiences to many of the primary source materials held within the Georgia Historical Society's archival collection and integrated materials - photographs, maps, manuscripts, portraits-from over 250 different archival sources. In total, more than 6,000 images of primary source materials were used in the production of the program.

Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board established the Outstanding Archives Awards Program in 2003 to recognize outstanding efforts in archives and records work in Georgia. By publicly recognizing excellent achievements, the Board strives to inspire others.
