Atlanta’s Stone Mountain Named Local Georgia History Book of the Year
SAVANNAH, Ga., June 20, 2012 – The Georgia Historical Society has named Atlanta’s Stone Mountain: A Multicultural History by Paul Hudson and Lora Mirza as the recipient of its 2012 Lilla M. Hawes Award. Given for the best book on Georgia county or local history published in the previous year, the award is named in honor of Lilla M. Hawes, GHS Director from 1948-1976. Atlanta’s Stone Mountain, published by The History Press, presents a wonderfully illustrated multicultural history of the legendary landmark. Hudson and Mirza cover everything from Native American life in the area, black and white settlement, the Civil War, the famous Confederate carving and today’s tourist attractions.
Paul Hudson is Associate Professor of History at Georgia Perimeter College and is a member of the Board of Editors of the Georgia Historical Quarterly. Lora Mirza is Associate Professor and Associate Library Director at Georgia Perimeter College and serves on the editorial board of the Georgia Library Quarterly.
