The Keynote Address of the 2016 Georgia History Festival
Savannah, Ga., September 30, 2015 – The Georgia Historical Society will present the keynote address of the 2016 Georgia History Festival, "The Birth of the American Dream: How the Real Mad Men Changed the World," with Dr. Stan Deaton, the Dr. Elaine B. Andrews Distinguished Historian at the Georgia Historical Society, on Thursday, October 1 at 6 p.m. at the Coastal Georgia Center.
“This is one of the most fascinating periods in American history," Deaton says. "In the 20 years after World War II Americans created the most powerful and affluent society ever. They bought cars, houses, and televisions in record numbers. They ate McDonalds hamburgers, fell in love with Lucy and screamed madly for Elvis. They worried about the bomb, feared and fought communists and had record numbers of babies, many of whom grew up to challenge everything their parents believed in. This period changed everything about the way Americans lived and created a global American brand of mass culture. We’ll discuss the extraordinary and ordinary men and women who led this revolution that changed forever America’s place on the world stage."
