Atlanta, Ga., June 8, 2016 – The Georgia Historical Society has named the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History in Augusta as the 2016 Affiliate Chapter of the Year. The award was presented by Elyse Butler, Membership and Outreach Associate for the Georgia Historical Society, and accepted by Christine Miller-Betts, Executive Director, Joyce Law, Program Manager, and Corey Rogers, Museum Historian.

“The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History has been a participant in the Affiliate Chapter Program for sixteen years and has collaborated with GHS on more historical marker projects – as either a sponsor or consultant – than almost any other organization in the state, which is no small feat,” said Ms. Butler. “The Museum exemplifies the GHS mission of collecting, examining, and teaching Georgia history, by sharing the stories of the people and institutions in their community that have made an impact on the history of our state.”

The award was presented this past weekend at a reception at the Museum following the dedication of the Silas Xavier Floyd historical marker. The Museum is also celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.

The affiliate chapter program was established in 1996 to provide resources to local historical organizations and create a network of institutions with the like-minded goal of sharing Georgia’s diverse history throughout the state. Today the program has nearly 200 participating organizations. Every year, the Georgia Historical Society chooses one affiliate chapter to recognize as our Affiliate of the Year.
