Georgia Historical Society to Present Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. John C. Inscoe

and the Lilla M. Hawes Award
for the Best Book in Georgia Local History to
Ashley Callahan and the University of Georgia Press

Atlanta, Ga., October 20, 2016- The Georgia Historical Society will present two of its most prestigious awards this Friday at the University of Georgia Main Library at 10:00 a.m.

Dr. John C. Inscoe will be honored with The John Macpherson Berrien Award for Lifetime Achievement in and service to Georgia history. The award was established in 2000 and named in honor of John Macpherson Berrien, one of the founders of GHS and the Society’s first president. He also served in the U.S. Senate and as U.S. Attorney General.

John Inscoe is The Albert B. Saye Professor of History and University Professor at the University of Georgia and  has taught at the University of Georgia for 32 years. He is the author of four books, editor of ten others, and writer of 46 articles, essays, and book chapters. His books includeMountain Masters: Slavery and the Sectional Crisis in Western North Carolina; Race, War, and Remembrance in the Appalachian South; Writing the Southern through the Self: Explorations in Southern Autobiography, and The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: The Civil War in Western North Carolina (co-author). He has served as the editor of the on-line New Georgia Encyclopedia since 1999.  He edited the Georgia Historical Quarterly for eleven years and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Historical Association from 2000 through 2014.

The Lilla M. Hawes Award is given for the best book in Georgia county or local history published in the previous year.  This year it is presented to author Ashley Callahan and the University of Georgia Press (publisher) for Southern Tufts: The Regional Origins and National Craze for Chenille Fashion.

Ashley Callahan has an MA in the history of American decorative arts from Parsons School of Design and the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and a BA in art history from the University of the South. Callahan, an independent scholar and former curator of decorative arts at the Georgia Museum of Art, is the author ofGeorgia Bellflowers: The Furniture of Henry Eugene Thomas, Modern Threads: Fashion and Art by Mariska Karasz, and Enchanting Modern: Ilonka Karasz.

Since its founding in 1938, the primary mission of the University of Georgia Press has been to support and enhance the University’s place as a major research institution by publishing outstanding works of scholarship and literature by scholars and writers throughout the world.

The University of Georgia Press currently publishes 60-70 new books a year and has a long history of publishing significant scholarship, creative and literary works, and books about the state and the region for general readers.

A Reception hosted by the University of Georgia Press and the University of Georgia History Department will follow the presentation of awards.
