Atlanta, Ga., November 10, 2016 - The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) presented the Roger K. Warlick Award to Historic Oakland Foundation for its public program, "Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours." The honor was presented at a private ceremony by Dr. W. Todd Groce, President and CEO of GHS.

“Historic Oakland Foundation’s 'Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours' is an excellent way of using the sense of place and costumed interpreters to offer visitors a unique means to interact with history,” said Groce. “It is an honor to present this year’s Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement Award in Programs to one of the Georgia Historical Society's oldest Affiliate Chapter Members.”

The Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement Award recognizes GHS Affiliate Chapters that demonstrate outstanding achievement in the field of public history. Now in its eleventh year, "Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours" is a public history program held over two weekends each October that offers visitors their only opportunity to visit Atlanta’s oldest public cemetery after dark. It also raises funding for projects including purchase and restoration of grave markers and the restoration of the African American Grounds, a large-scale restoration project beginning in 2017.

“It is a tremendous honor,” said Mary Woodlan, Director of Special Events at Historic Oakland Foundation. “We share this win with all of the staff, volunteers, attendees, sponsors, and supporters who help make ‘Capturing the Spirit of Oakland’ possible.”
