Savannah, Ga., April 27, 2017 - The Georgia Historical Society has awarded the 2017 Roger K. Warlick Local History Achievement Award in Exhibits to the Woodward Academy/Georgia Military Academy Archives in College Park for their exhibit, “Georgia Military Academy and Atlanta Aviation at Candler Field.”
“As an enthusiastic member of the Affiliate Chapter Program of the Georgia Historical Society, the Woodward Academy/Georgia Military Academy Archives is honored to receive this award,” said Rusty Zaring, archivist and curator of the exhibit. “For the past one hundred and seventeen years, we have pursued excellence in education, first as a military school for boys and now as a large and diverse independent college preparatory school. We celebrate our long, distinguished history and, through our Archives program, work to preserve and display the heritage of our commitment to the local community in College Park and the larger metropolitan Atlanta area.”
Named for former GHS President Roger K. Warlick, the Local History Achievement Awards are presented annually to members of the GHS Affiliate Chapter Program in recognition of excellence in programming and scholarship by local historical organizations across the state. Nominations for Warlick Awards are accepted in the fall and winter of each year in the categories of programs, exhibits, and special projects.
“Affiliate chapters of the Georgia Historical Society truly help implement our mission of collecting, examining, and teaching our state’s history on a local level,” said Elyse Butler, Outreach Coordinator at the Georgia Historical Society. “Through the use of primary and secondary sources, this exhibit does just that by relating the story of Georgia Military Academy’s aviation history to students, faculty, and visitors to Woodward Academy.”
