The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is dedicated to offering trustworthy resources that support K-12 teachers’ digital classrooms. Over the coming weeks GHS will be working diligently to provide educators and parents valuable tools and information to meet the needs of students during the Covid-19 school closures. The “Digital Resources for Georgia’s Students” blog series will explore GHS’s extensive catalog of online resources for learning Georgia and American history and offer strategies for using them at home or in a digital classroom.
Today in Georgia History (TiGH) is an award-winning educational project that focuses on an historical event or person associated with a particular day in Georgia history. Each 90-second segment is suitable for all grade levels, and collectively they cover a wide range of social, cultural, political, and economic topics, and are aligned to state and national social studies standards.
TiGH was created as a collaboration between the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) and Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) to provide audiences with innovative and engaging programming for learning Georgia history.
All 366 episodes of TiGH can be viewed at https://www.todayingeorgiahistory.org/.
The interactive website serves as an educational resource for teachers and students in classrooms statewide. The website provides audio and video streaming of the segments, as well as transcripts, and includes tips for teachers, curriculum, writing prompts, review questions and discussion topics, classroom exercises, follow-up research topics and selected primary-source material.
The TiGH website can be searched by topic, keyword, or date and segments can be narrowed down into their subject’s relative time period which spans from the Colonial era to the 21st Century.
TiGH episodes can be shared to students directly in their digital classrooms. Teachers across the state use the episodes in warm-up activities, as a basis for research topics, and a means of reviewing important figures and dates in Georgia’s history. This resource offers enormous potential for teachers and students as they shift to learning online at home!
