Archibald Battle Lovett was born in Sylvania on June 21, 1884. He graduated from Mercer University at age 17 and began practicing law at age 23. Lovett had a successful career in law and politics and was appointed judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on October 18, 1941. Lovett served as president of the Georgia Historical Society from 1937-1938. He died on December 28, 1945 and is buried in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
