Savannah, GA, February 10, 2025—The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) will premiere a new video for Georgia Day on February 12, 2025, in recognition of the 292nd anniversary of Georgia’s founding on February 12, 1733. As part of GHS’s Georgia History Festival, this short online content-rich program explores the 13th colony’s founding and early development. Featuring greetings from friends and leaders across the state, this presentation is aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence and includes classroom resources for primary source analysis geared toward middle and high school students.
The video, with support from Chick-fil-A, will be available on February 12, 2025, on WTOC+ as well as georgiahistoryfestival.org/georgiaday.
A trailer for the video can be found here.
The Georgia History Festival is the signature K-12 educational program of the Georgia Historical Society, reaching hundreds of thousands of students statewide. Beginning with the new school year in September, a variety of public programs, exhibits, events, and educational resources bring history to life for students of all ages and encourage Georgians to explore the richness of our state’s past.
Through the 2024-2025 Festival focus of study, “The Reality of Our Liberty”: The First Amendment and Freedom of the Press, GHS explores the vital role that democratic institutions play in sustaining a republican form of government. Festival events and resources emphasize the role that a press free from government control has historically played in informing the American people; as a marketplace for competing ideas; and in holding government and our leaders accountable to those that have elected them.
Available on the GHS website, new classroom activities complementing the new Georgia Day video encourage students to explore colonial newspapers for insight into the Trustees’ plans for the new colony, and its defenses against Spanish Florida.
