Leonard Leopold Mackall was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 29, 1879. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1900 and devoted most of his life to cataloguing books for various notable institutions in America and Germany. A celebrated bibliophile and student of history, he served as president of the Georgia Historical Society in 1937. Mackall died in Falmouth, Virginia, on May 19, 1937.
