William Washington Gordon III was born into the illustrious Gordon family in 1866. He achieved the rank of major during a 20-year service with the Georgia State Cavalry, including service during the Spanish-American War. Gordon served as the Georgia Historical Society president from 1922-1931. He died March 1, 1932 and was buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah.
