SAVANNAH, GA, February 3, 2022 – The Georgia Historical Society named the Coastal Georgia Historical Society in St. Simons Island, Georgia, as the 2021 Affiliate Chapter of the Year. The award was presented at a small outdoor ceremony late last week by Elyse Butler, Georgia Historical Society Marker Manager, and Lisa Landers, Georgia Historical Society Education Manger.

“The Coastal Georgia Historical Society brings an awareness to Coastal Georgia’s history and how that history helped shape the region and state,” said Ms. Butler. “By participating in the Georgia Historical Marker Program, educational programming, and Georgia History Festival events, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society plays a vital role in implementing the Georgia Historical Society’s mission to collect, examine, and teach Georgia History. It is a pleasure to present them with the well-deserved title of Affiliate Chapter of the Year.”

The Georgia Historical Society's Affiliate Chapter Program was established in 1996 to provide resources to local historical organizations and create a network of institutions with the like-minded goal of sharing Georgia’s diverse history throughout the state. Today, the program has approximately 100 participating organizations. Every year, the Georgia Historical Society chooses one affiliate member to recognize as the Affiliate Chapter of the Year for its exemplary leadership in the field of state and local history.

“Coastal Georgia Historical Society is excited to receive the 2021 Affiliate of the Year Award from the Georgia Historical Society! Our current Strategic Plan directs us to expand our statewide impact and to engage new audiences through partners and partnerships, so this award is especially meaningful to us,” said Sherri Jones, Director of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. “We have enjoyed working with GHS over the years through the historical marker committee and as a regular participant in Super Museum Sunday. During the past year, our joint efforts sponsored and won approval for a new marker for Igbo Landing and provided a new webinar for educators on how to bring local history to life.”
