Georgia Dome to Join Iconic Sites in Georgia with Business History Initiative Historical Marker

Atlanta, August 30, 2018 - The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) announced today that they will dedicate a new Georgia Business History historical marker recognizing Atlanta’s iconic Georgia Dome. The dedication will take place Thursday, September 6, at 10:00 a.m. at the former site of the Georgia Dome, now the Home Depot Back Yard at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, 1 Backyard Way in Atlanta. The historical marker is sponsored by GHS and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority.

“GHS is excited to highlight the huge role that the Georgia Dome played in shaping not only the physical landscape of Atlanta, but also the cultural and economic landscape of the city and the state of Georgia,” said Dr. W. Todd Groce, President and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society. “From its beginnings as an architectural marvel, to its role as a host site during the 1996 Olympic Games and the home of the Atlanta Falcons for 25 seasons, the Georgia Dome’s legacy will be ensured for future generations through this new historical marker.

In addition to Dr. Groce, speakers for the event will include Carl Adkins, Executive Director, Super Bowl Host Committee; The Honorable Calvin Smyre, Georgia House of Representatives; Frank Poe, Executive Director of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority; and Walter M. “Sonny” Deriso, Chairman, GHS Board of Curators.
