Newton County

Marker Text: Newton County, created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 24, 1821, is named for Sergent John Newton, Revolutionary soldier and friend of Sergent William Jasper, for whom neighboring Jasper County is named. The county seat, Covington, Georgia, is named for General Leonard Covington, known for his role in the War of 1812. G.C. Adams, County School Commissioner, helped develop one of the first transportation systems for public school students in the state in the early 1900s. Adams later founded the first 4-H Club, then known as the Newton County Boys Corn Club. Emory University's Oxford College, chartered in 1836 as a Methodist college known as Emory at Oxford, is named for Bishop John Emory and is located near this marker.
