Marker Text: Wilcox County was created by the Georgia Legislature on December 22, 1857. It is uncertain whether its namesake is John Willcox, an early influential resident of neighboring Telfair County, or his son General Mark Willcox, state legislator and a founder of the Georgia Supreme Court. The first county officers include Sheriff Joseph S. Graham, Clerk of Superior & Inferior Courts Stephen Bowen, Ordinary James W. Mashburn, Tax Receiver John McCall, Tax Collector Stephen Mitchell, Surveyor William A. Barker, and Coroner Daniel M. Bruce.
