GHS TO CAP OFF CIVIL WAR 150 COMMEMORATION WITH TWO HISTORICAL MARKERS:
MARCH TO THE SEA (SAVANNAH) AND THE CSS GEORGIA
Savannah, Ga., December 10, 2014 - This week, the Georgia Historical Society will unveil two new historical markers capping off the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Georgia.
The second of two markers on the March to the Sea will be dedicated at a ceremony Thursday, December 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Madison Square. GHS Board Chairman Robert S. Jepson, Jr. will welcome guests, followed by remarks by GHS President and CEO Dr. W. Todd Groce. Charlie Crawford, President of the Georgia Battlefields Association, will also give brief remarks and will read the marker text following the unveiling. The first March to the Sea Marker, commemorating the beginning of the march, was unveiled last month at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta.
On Friday, GHS will dedicate the last in the Civil War 150 marker series with a historical marker for the CSS Georgia at Old Fort Jackson in Savannah. The CSS Georgia, also known as “The Ladies Gunboat,” was a Confederate ironclad that was scuttled as the Confederate Army evacuated the city in 1864. Speakers for this event include Michael Jordan, President, Cosmos Mariner Productions, Elizabeth Piechnocinski, President, Savannah Chapter No. 2, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Dr. W. Todd Groce of the Georgia Historical Society. The marker text will be read by Tony Pizzo, Director, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.
