Media and Cold War America
From virtual and in-person programs and events for the public, to new classroom resources and training opportunities for teachers, GHS will examine some of the most significant events, people, and movements of the second half of the twentieth century as we mark the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Cold War. With the rise of mass media and television, the late 20th century was characterized by ideological competitions that were carried out locally, nationally, and internationally, including the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the Space Race.

Each year, GHS selects a person or topic significant in Georgia's history as the focus of our educational programs and resources. The 2021-2022 focus of study is, “From Marshes to Mountains, Georgia’s Changing Landscape: Geography, History, and Community.” From online and in-person programs and events for the public, to new classroom resources and training opportunities for teachers, GHS explores how land and our relationship to it have been crucial factors in creating social, cultural, economic, and political systems over time.
Georgia Explorer: Map Skills Activity Teacher Guide
This guide developed by GHS is meant to support the development of critical thinking skills through utilizing and analyzing historic maps of Georgia aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence.
Georgia Explorer: Part of a Map Activity Game
In this activity, students use analytical skills to quickly identify key features of a map using maps from a particular historical period. This activity can be used as a fun endcap for a unit in second grade. It can be used to refresh students' knowledge before third grade units on Georgia's geography.
Georgia Explorer Maps: Activities 2 and 3
In Activity 2, Mapping a Timeline, students will create a chronological timeline using historical maps and practice the Observe, Reflect, and Question classroom strategy. For Activity 3, Thinking about Maps, students will be using three maps of Georgia, to analyze them on a deeper level. Moving beyond the observation step, students will have the opportunity to reflect and react to the primary sources.
