Savannah, GA, January 25, 2023—The Georgia Historical Society’s Georgia History Festival continues in February with three free events open to the public. The festivities begin with the Colonial Faire and Muster on Saturday, February 4, and Sunday, February 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Wormsloe State Historic Site in Savannah. This free popular living-history program features costumed interpreters and vendors offering students and adults a taste of the excitement and adversity of life for the first settlers of colonial Georgia. Highlights include cannon and musket firing; blacksmithing, craft, and cooking demonstrations; Native-American life interpretations; storytelling; and period music and dance. The Colonial Faire and Muster is sponsored by the Georgia Ports Authority, with additional support from the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Georgia.
Sunday, February 5, is also the date of the Georgia History Festival’s Super Museum Sunday, when over 100 sites across Georgia will open their doors free of charge for this annual event. Attendees can experience our state’s rich history and cultural life as historic sites, house museums, art museums, and other points of interest throughout Georgia open their doors to the public, providing an exceptional opportunity to experience history in our own backyard. Super Museum Sunday is sponsored by Delta Air Lines.
The Festival continues on Friday, February 10, as the Georgia Day Parade returns to Savannah after a two-year absence due to the pandemic. The parade commemorates the founding of the Georgia colony on February 12, 1733, a tradition dating back to the earliest years of the colony’s founding. Starting at 10:45 a.m., the parade route begins at Forsyth Park and continues north along Bull Street to City Hall. Students, musicians, local dignitaries, and costumed historical figures representing the broad span of Georgia history will march through Savannah’s historic squares. The Georgia Day Parade is sponsored by the Georgia Power Company. The media sponsor is WTOC, who will livestream the parade on their website for those who cannot attend the parade in person.
